  • Birmingham AL Job Summary/Responsibilities: Planning, design, installation, maintenance, management, and coordination of all enterprise network systems (LAN/Wan Data, Voice and Video over IP, and Wireless)

» Accountability over the technical architecture, stability, resiliency, recommendations and general health related to the LAN/WAN network
» Is a top level technical contributor with advanced knowledge and experience in the area of LAN/WAN networking, communications and related hardware/software
» Maintains a high level of technical expertise and studies vendor products to determine those which best meet organization needs
» Presents information to management which may result in the purchase and installation of hardware, software and telecommunication equipment
» Recommends network security and policies
» Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of situation requires evaluation and judgment
» Responsible for evaluating current systems
» Assists in the planning of large scale system projects through vendor comparisons and cost studies
» Provides leadership and training to lower level network administrators

Duties Include:
» Responsible for engineering, designing, configuring, installing, integrating, maintaining, and troubleshooting of enterprise LAN/WAN networks and systems (enterprise converged networks, wired and wireless)
» Accountability over enterprise LAN/WAN networks and systems including but are not limited to technical architecture, network stability, and multiple LAN and WAN network devices and platforms
» Responsible for the assessment and optimization of the LAN/WAN networks, through network monitoring, statistics, and daily health checks
» Coordinates service calls and schedules appointments with service providers to ensure satisfactory resolution of problems and malfunctions
» Maintains accurate and comprehensive documentation diagrams of Network Infrastructure
» Maintains enterprise wide IP Addressing scheme
» Research, evaluate, and recommend new tools and technologies for converged data/voice/video network vendor products
» Identify network trends and abnormalities and proactively take steps to prevent performance impacts to network traffic and business function
» Perform pro-active support functions and reporting to maintain the integrity of the enterprise network equipment and infrastructure
» Perform site surveys and coordinate with wiring vendors, in support of various wiring projects and installations
» Perform load-balancer installation and configuration with recommendations and troubleshooting for corporate and production web Servers
» Prepares and maintains a 3 year LAN/WAN plan, to facilitate new requirements, technologies and growth
» Plan and manage LAN/WAN capital budget spending
» Analyze, determine, and document technical requirements
» Assist with the preparation of estimates for new technology and maintenance of existing technology
» Communicate accurate and useful status reports to department/division management and other management as needed on a timely basis
» Anticipate issues and proactively resolve them
» Prepare contingencies, scenarios, scenario plans and action items to resolve issues
» Identify and initiate continuous improvements
» Instill commitment to quality, customer service, ownership, and teamwork
» Monitor adherence of technical teams to defined processes
» Build strong customer relationships. Promote internal/external customer service among organization
» Maintain awareness of new technological developments in industry and processes – implement concepts appropriately
» Provide third level Helpdesk support to end users, including technical support regarding network operations problems and malfunctions
» Work with ticket queue to track support issues
» Ensure goals for teams are being met and manage group commitments
» Assist team members to solve problems, make innovative improvements and make decisions
» Mentor and motivate junior members of technical support teams
» Ensure work assignments use skills of junior team members and offer opportunity/challenge for skill development
» Identify potential business opportunities and communicate them to departmental management
» Make decisions that reflect the best interest of the company
» Available to provide after hours support
» Be willing and available to travel as required
» Be willing and available for on-call support
» Other duties as assigned

Required Skills/Experience:
» College Degree Preferred or Equivalent Work Experience. Industry certifications a plus.
» Minimum of 7-10 years LAN/WAN experience; network concepts, design, tools and troubleshooting of multiple LAN and WAN network devices and platforms. Requires knowledge of TCP/IP network protocol, and network monitoring and tracing tools, such as Fluke monitors, cable testers, and Ethereal
» Experienced with the multiple layers of the OSI model (Open Systems Interconnection Basic Reference Model), working with dynamic protocols (EIGRP, OSPF, BGP and policy-based routing); implementing LAN/WAN software/hardware to include: Spanning Tree, MPLS, and Frame Relay; implementation of VLAN (802.1Q), and Nortel and Cisco line of Ethernet Routers and Switches
» Experience with network traffic analysis, QOS, VoIP, converged networks
» Experience mapping business requirements to technology capabilities, identifying gaps and omissions, and designing end-to-end solutions
» Systems/networks and/or critical systems sufficient to understand and direct efforts to configure and administer systems

» Strong background in Layer 2 technologies:
o Spanning-Tree, including 802.1d and 802.1w
o Trunking (Ether-channel)
o 802.1q VLAN tagging
o Dark Fiber with short, long, and extended reach optics
o CWDM or DWDM gear with Dark Fiber
o 10 Gig Ethernet scalable to 100 Gigs or more
o Strong troubleshooting skills and effective troubleshooting methods including:

  • Layer 1 (copper cabling troubles/fiber signal strength)
  • Layer 2 (spanning tree, VLAN tagging, MAC address tracing)
  • Layer 3 (routing troubles, EGP versus IGP redistribution, BGP attribute studying, prefix length issues)
  • Layer 4 (Firewall troubles)
  • Layer 5 thru 7 (assisting with identifying application issues masquerading as network troubles)

o MPLS Experience

» Strong background in Layer 3 technologies:
o OSPF Routing including route redistribution
o Multi-homing
o Load balancing traffic and engineering for automatic failover
o Multiple methods for equal-cost load balancing
o Routing policy to manipulate BGP attributes to hit 95% billing
o Isolation of routing policies between multiple datacenters including community attribute schemes
o Route reflectors and Confederations
o Flow analysis experience a plus
o Architecture and Design
o Understanding of peering policies vs. transit policies
o Routing policy for auto-fail over and transit policy segregation
o Remote access VPN (IPsec, GRE, 3DES or AES VPN Tunnels) a plus
