Candidates must possess

A 2.2 degree in Computing where the course is Software Engineering focused
Working knowledge of security protocols inclusive of those associated with data integrity, data confidentiality, authorisation and authentication in addition to a working knowledge of TCP/IP and database design and implementation.
Demonstrable experience in C# software development and interface development.
As this post requires the applicant to travel on official duty, the successful candidate must have access to a form of transport which will enable them to fulfil their responsibilities.
To be considered for this position you must be eligible to work in Northern Ireland and to undertake the QUB Postgraduate course at various course venues in N. Ireland and the Republic of Ireland

2.1 degree classification.
Experience in working with industry.
Knowledge of .Net, C#, Encryption and Use of encryption software object libraries.
A good level of software understanding and computer programming capability.
FUSION Graduates who have completed the FUSION Post Graduate Diploma in Management need not apply.

The InterTradeIreland FUSION Programme offers Graduates an opportunity to manage technology transfer projects with some of the most progressive companies on the island of Ireland. FUSION gives companies access to the wealth of expertise and facilities in our universities and colleges across the island of Ireland, allowing them to make strategic advances in innovation. FUSION initially develops partnerships between companies with a technology need on one side of the border, and colleges or universities that can provide the required specialist expertise on the other side. The partners work collectively to plan a specific project that will solve a technology need within the company. A high calibre Graduate is then employed to spearhead the project for a period of 18 months and act as the link between the university and the company. The successful FUSION Graduate will receive an attractive package and will also be given the opportunity to gain a fully-funded Post Graduate Diploma Business and Management from The Leadership Institute Queen’s University Belfast (QUB).

In this instance Sentel Independent Ltd and Letterkenny Institute of Technology (LYIT) have partnered to carry out the project described below.


Sentel is a software development company which specialises in Telecommunications Expense Management (TEM). The software Sentel provides basically allows large organizations such as health trusts to reduce both their landline and mobile costs by reporting on usage and identifying areas where costs savings can be made. Examples of this are monitoring call durations and to what locations they are being made ensuring that these are for business related purposes and are not excessive in length indicating abuse of resources. Using such information large organizations can reduce their costs considerably. Depending upon implementation strategy these can represent significant savings in the order of between 3-20%. Sentel is progressive in its strategy and operation and has been at the forefront of innovation since 1998. The company have appointed a member of staff as the Company Supervisor on the project.


This proposal compliments the research activities of the Letterkenny Institute of Technology. It is wholly consistent with the strategic direction of the Institute in relation to RD in computing and in particular the research area of Unified Communications, Virtualisation and Software Development. The concept of participating in joint research with industry is firmly embedded in the ethos of the Institute. The Institute, in collaboration with Enterprise Ireland and local industry in Donegal, has participated in a number of initiatives . As an example, the HINT (Hybrid Internetworking Internet Technologies) project, supported by Enterprise Ireland’s Innovation Partnership scheme, resulted in a secure wireless sensor network that is currently deployed in industries as diverse as food distribution and pharmaceutical retail. The institute as a result, has accumulated significant experience in secure RFID, inter-device communication, security and software development. Telecommunications, voice and data monitoring and reporting techniques are definitely complementary to this experience base and its implementation is within the core competencies of the Institute. Additionally, the Institute offers a BSc degree in Green and Cloud Computing. Teaching and learning can be directly correlated with this research area and it has particular relevance in private data center development, virtualization, software development, energy efficiency and cost saving. Knowledge accumulated from participation in the proposed project will also be used in the development of new courses and course material for the Green and Cloud course.

The academic institute has appointed a member of its staff as the Academic Supervisor to provide the required specialist expertise for the project.


Unified Communications is emerging as the new approach to sharing all kinds of information inside large organisations. Effectively the data network or broadband network inside large organisations will be used for the transmission of all kinds of information including documents, video calls etc. but crucially to Sentel’s business also telephone calls. To provide TEM services under this Unified Communications approach Sentel need to integrate the Microsoft Lync data interface product into their existing product and provide data encryption algorithms to prevent potentially sensitive data being intercepted while it is being gathered.


Reporting to the Company Supervisor, you will be employed by Sentel Independent Ltd to lead the FUSION project. You will be responsible for ensuring that it is brought to a successful conclusion with the support from your supervisors. This is an exciting opportunity for a Graduate to gain excellent industrial experience through a structured and planned programme of work. In addition to the daily support of a Company Supervisor, a dedicated member of Letterkenny Institute of Technology with expertise in the project area will spend time with you and your Company Supervisor supporting the project. Additional support will also be given to you by a FUSION Consultant responsible for ensuring that all projects run according to schedule.

Main Duties

To carry out the tasks outlined in the project workplan developed by the company and academic partnership
To report formally on a quarterly basis on progress with the workplan to a Project Management Group (PMG) which includes the assigned FUSION Consultant representing InterTradeIreland
To liaise effectively with your Company Supervisor on a regular basis
To liaise effectively with your Academic Supervisor to ensure that the required expertise is being provided to the project
To convene and service monthly technical meetings with the core project team (Graduate, Company Supervisor and Academic Supervisor)
To direct the necessary forward planning for the success of the project
To train staff so that the new technology is fully transferred and embedded in the company
To attend Postgraduate Diploma Business and Management delivered by QUB.
To assist with the preparation of a project Final Report required by InterTradeIreland
Any other duties which might fall within the general ambit of the post


The project is of 18 months duration and offers an ideal opportunity for you to develop skills in

Research Skills: Coordination, synthesis and conceptualisation

People Skills: Facilitation, mediation and problem solving.

Managerial Skills: Self Organisation, Project Management, Presentation Skills, Team Working, Change Management and time management.

Technical Skills: Software development skills in the field of security and telecommunications, software repository management skills, quality assurance. Improved skills in the presentation of technical data.

The graduate will develop a greater level of expertise in software development and use of third party object libraries, security protocols and software development for security.

It will fast track your career opportunities for advancement into Senior Management and at the end of the project there is an excellent opportunity for permanent employment with the Company. You will have the advantage of being a part of a wider network of FUSION Graduates with a clear plan for career development. You will also receive a healthy support package on top of your salary including £1500 towards your personal training and development and £3000 to cover expenses.


You will be expected to attend a management training course, designed specifically for FUSION Graduates and delivered by Queen’s University Belfast (QUB). Its aims are to enhance your personal, professional and managerial capabilities so that you can complete your FUSION project successfully and to equip you with the necessary skills to take up future leadership roles in business. The course consists of a series of five, two-day theoretical workshops; however, a substantial part of the qualification will be work based. On successful completion of the training, you will obtain a Post Graduate Diploma Business and Management which will be accredited by QUB.


The successful candidate will be based at Sentel Independent Ltd 15 McKibbin House, Eastbank Road, Carryduff, Belfast, Co. Antrim, BT8 8BD. The Graduate will also travel independently on occasions between Sentel Independent Ltd and Letterkenny Institute of Technology and between Sentel Independent Ltd and the postgraduate course venue as advised by QUB. Independent travel to other locations will also be required occasionally as the job dictates.
