The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is currently searching for entry-level candidates for the VDOT INTERNSHIP PROGRAM in BUSINESS. Are YOU ready to make decisions that make a difference in the everyday lives of the traveling public.
This developmental program is designed to give you exposure to the diverse types of work the Department performs and helps you develop skills in your current field of study. Through hands-on job assignments, you will have the opportunity to work closely with a diverse group of professionals.
Intern jobs are located in Suffolk, Richmond, Colonial Heights, and Staunton, VA.
Communications Interns-Suffolk & Colonial Heights
Need a highly motivated individual interested in a fast-paced media environment to work with the Public Affairs team. Draft press and media releases, traffic alerts, write articles about district activities for Facebook, respond to citizen inquiries, and update contacts database. Candidate must be seeking a degree in Mass Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, English, or similar field. Must have strong writing, editing, and customer service skills, the ability to work under tight deadlines, and strong MS Office skills.
Information Technology Intern-Staunton
Serve as District SharePoint Coordinator assisting business units to develop and maintain SharePoint team sites, and support hands-on SharePoint training activities. Perform various Technology related tasks (wireless inventory, telecommunications ) and assist with special projects. SharePoint can be learned on the job by a candidate with good technology skills. Must be seeking a degree in Computer Sciences, Civil Engineering Technology, or similar field. Requires good interpersonal skills, written and communication skills.
Work in federal or non-federal accounts to enter contracts into VDOT’s financial system, monitor project expenditures, and ensure VDOT has billed FHWA correctly. Perform maintenance activities, accounts receivable collections activities, and use customer service skills to assist with managing delinquent collection accounts. Must have knowledge of GAAP, MS Excel to include pivot tables, ability to research and analyze financial data, to follow procedures, and attention to detail. Must be seeking a degree in Business, Accounting, or similar field, have intermediate-level Excel & Word skills, be a team player with the ability to work independently, and good writing skills.
Performance Improvement & Training Intern-Richmond
Support the Learning Center staff in determining why performance gaps exist and implement performance improvement strategies. Work with VDOT’s three “pipeline” recruiting programs for college students to gather and analyze data, design and deliver training, and develop learning aides to achieve business goals. Must be seeking a degree in Business, Organizational Development, Human Resources, Industrial Psychology or a similar field of study. Must have good oral and written communications skills, computer skills, and organizational skills.
Performance Management Intern-Richmond
Assist the Business Transformation team in tracking the status of business plan objectives by interviewing business customers, analyzing data to find the root cause of problems, helping to write reports, defining and mapping business processes. Must be working on a degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Industrial Engineering or similar area. Good verbal and written communication skills, data analysis skills and the ability to quickly grasp business information are required. Strong Excel skills are required. SharePoint, Access, PowerPoint and Visio skills are preferred.
Must be at least 18 years of age, be currently enrolled full-time in a college or university and have a minimum GPA of 2.5. You need to be working towards a Bachelors Degree and be at least a Junior or Senior in the Fall of 2013 or working on a Masters Degree or Post-baccalaureate certificate. Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
Coursework or degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Communications, Public Administration, Industrial Relations, Human Resources, Engineering, Organizational Development or similar field is desired. Experience gained in class and school projects may qualify as work experience for this position.

You will have demonstrated ability to make quality and timely decisions, take initiative, communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, prioritize and organize multiple demands in a continuously changing environment, and meet established deadlines. Ability to anticipate problems, provide solutions, follow instructions, learn quickly, and collaborate with team mates is important.
You will work in the summer and, if you choose, during the school year. This internship assignment could be extended for a 2nd year. This is a part-time position – no state benefits offered. Housing is NOT provided.
This position requires a fingerprint based criminal history background check and a DMV record check.
